Mindfullness in everyday life.

Have you found yourself going through the motions of life without finding much enjoyment? All too often we get caught up in a chaotic lifestyle and don’t take time to appreciate life. That may mean always thinking of the next thing you have to get done on your “to-do-list”, in the shower, driving to work, lying in bed before you fall asleep…you get my drift.

We also let a chaotic lifestyle affect our eating and nutrition habits. Maybe you don’t feel like you have enough time to make healthy meals and dine out often. Your busy schedule may also mean eating lunch in the car, in a rush, or at your desk doing work. These habits do not promote mindful eating or a mindful lifestyle.

Mindful eating essentially is being aware of your eating and eating habits. You eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. It promotes a healthy relationship with food. You eat food to nourish, to enjoy, and to promote health vs. selecting food because it is “healthy” “diet” or a “good” food. Mindful eating can help you get in tune with your body and your individual hunger and satiety cues.

How to practice mindful eating: “The Big Three”

-Select food that is appealing to you at a particular time, without judgement. Sometimes this may mean a bowl of soup or a salad, but sometimes this may mean a burger with fries or buffalo chicken wings. No foods are off-limits (unless you have a food allergy).

-Take time with your meals, without distraction.

Sit down and no multitasking! Slow down, it takes about 20 minutes for your body to realize that you are getting full.

-Savor the flavors and textures of food.

You may be surprised how different food tastes and how enjoyable mealtime can be.

I encourage you to take 20-30 minutes out of your day to take time for yourself. Do something you really love to do. This could be listening to music, drawing, taking pictures, going for a walk or run, reading a good novel, meditating, sipping on a cup of tea. You get the point.
