healthy foods at restaurants

hey my name is thom, showing you my side of thailand. in this video i'm going to show you my top 10 foods and restaurantsin chiang mai, thailand. now is purely subjective because is humanly impossiblefor myself or anyone really, to go try and eat at all the restaurants and foodcourt in chiang mai. in this video i'm not going to just strictly talk about thaicuisines, there will be a couple thai dishes in my top 10 list but there arealso going to be other international foods and cuisines from all over theworld. like mexican food, middle eastern food, even western food. it's not strictlyjust thai food. all the maps and addresses for all therestaurants and all the foods that you

will be seeing here will be at the end of thevideo. if you want you can check each of these restaurants and try them out foryourself see if you like it or not, so it's gonnabe at the end of video if you want to check them out. first dish on the list iscalled khao soi gai, which is chicken on curry noodle they also have khao soi moo, which isthe pork. i grew up eating all sort of thai food as well as isaan food, and western food all my life. honestly i never seen or try this dish before. the only timei tried it is when i came to chiang mai if you're in chiang mai and you nevertry this dish, i highly recommend you at

least try it out once and see if you likeit, if you don't like it don't order again. you can go to practically any foodcourt they usually serve this. number nine onmy list is a small restaurant called little istanbul, they specialize indoner kebab. i kinda randomly stumble into this place when i was just checking outone with night market in chiang ma. it was one of those moments when i wasn'thungry, i could probably not eat for another 2-3 hours but when i saw thisplace and they had like a stack meat in front of restaurant and the smell of it.i can't go buy this place without trying it once. you can see that the way hestacked the meat is that he would place

the fatty part of the chicken on top ofstack and when it's rotating and cooking the fatty juice would start drippingdown slow cook the chicken and it keeps the the meat nice and moist i also noticed when he was cuttingthe the chicken he was using a electrical knife, which is unusual i'venever seen anyone does that. usually what they do is they would use a verylong knife and they would just saw off this place doesn't do that it seemedlike he has all the tools of the trade so yes, so far this is my favorite doner kebab in thailand. i talked to the man and he said it's just been recentlyopened for six months, i hope by the

time you check it out or the next timei go there i hope he's still around and heshould because he's doner kebab is very high quality, is very good ok, number eight is the famous local restaurant there called sp chicken. it is located right inside theold city. the way they grill the chicken is very unique so what do is they would stack the chicken on both sides of the charcoal and the charcoal is in thecenter of the chickens. it create something that's very eye-catching, so ifyou're walking by with driving by

you can't miss it. not only the way theygrill their chicken is very unique and eye-catching. the way it's grill is alsovery clever because when you stack the chicken right side up, all the juices from the chicken drip down away from the charcoal. the grilled chickenwas very flavorful i mean it's very good, if you're in towni would recommend you to check this place out. for someone like myself whoate a lot of grilled chicken in thailand before. the grill chicken herewas good but it's just slightly above average so what stood out for me in thisrestaurant wasn't the sp chicken it was

more of the second item in the menuthat they have. it's called nam took moo. basically translate into waterfall pork and it's basically grill pork slice up and thendip into some special sauce. what make the nam took moo special for me anywaysis that the the grill pork you can just eat it on its own and is absolutelydelicious but what they do is, they mix it up with some sauce so it task a littlebit salty, a little bit sweet, little bit sour and a little bit spicy you can ask them not to put anyspice. the way thais eat these dishes it's with sticky rice but you don't haveto

so what you do is you would eat a littlebit of sticky rice and a little bit of the nam took moo or the sp chicken. so the flavor of the chicken and the flavor of the man took moo is not overpowering number seven, i don't know the name ofthis restaurant so i'm just going to call it a big noodle restaurant. theyspecialized in thai style noodle soup. for a big bowl of noodle is 499baht, i've never seen anything like it before and if you can eat it by yourselfwithin 30 minutes you don't have to pay. i wanted to try tobig noodle and take pictures and photographs for you guys to see but iwent there alone. i can get enough people

to go with me and i didn't want to orderthe big bowl because i didn't want to waste food there's no way i could finish this bowlby myself, so what i did was i order smaller bowls. they also have regularsized bowls for around 40, 50 baht it you're a noodle soup fan and you likeeating the vietnamese pho that sort of things and you like eatingnoodle soup you should check this place out at least once. number six is called corner bistro they specialized in hamburgers andfrench fries. western cuisine this restaurant was just like minutes awayfrom my apartment but i didn't try it

until the last month i was in chiang maibecause this place get pretty busy during the high season and also i preferthai and asian foods over north american foods. so i didn't try it untilthe last month when i was in chiang mai the first dish i tried was your standardhamburger and french fries. the veggies looked perfect, the lettuce was perfectly green it has no holes or cut to it, the tomato wasslightly grilled and slightly salted and pepper the portion was not your typicalthai portion, this is a western size portion when i first saw it i thought i'm going to have a hard time finishing it but eventually i did finisheverything

the beef was premium beef it didn't havemuch ingredients into it i think they only added maybe a little bit of saltand i think the burger here was so much better than your typical burgers in mcdonald's or burgerking, the french fries also premium french fries the restaurant claims thatthey have the best french fries and so far i have to agree with them, anyways idon't eat a lot of french fries and hamburgers so this is like one or two places that i ate hamburgers in chiang mai but the french fries was very good it was nice and crispy on the outside and tender from the inside

a lot bigger than your typical mcdonald and kfc french fries. if someone else was doing this top-10 list who is abig hamburgers and french fries fan then i am then i would think that personwould put this restaurant on their top three or top four restaurant but for mei'm kind of bias because i prefer thai and asian food over western food but thisrestaurant is very good highly recommended if you're craving for somehamburgers or french fries you will not be disappointed to try thisplace number five on my list is just a bunch of restaurants and street vendors on saturday night market at wua lai road which opens only on saturday

evenings from 4pm till 11pm or midnightmajority of the food vendors are located at the north end of the night marketi'll have to map and address of all these places at the end of video so ifyou want you can check each one them out and see if you agree with me or not. youwill find all sort of bbq chicken, bbq pork, seafood, vegetarian dishes, fruitsmoothies. some of dishes here can cost as low as 20 baht and up to 200 to 300baht per dish. the seafood probably going to cost 300 to 400 baht per dish so depending what you eat and you can try to the famous pad thai for maybe 50 or 60 baht the great thing about this place is thatonce you finish eating you can check out

the night market there and do alittle bit of shopping number four is the chinese dim sum if i ever go to back to chiang mai again ithink i'm going to look for a cheap apartment next to this restaurantbecause it was that good. when you're ordering the dim sum, you're supposed to stand onthe other side of the glass and you basically just point out what dish youwant and they are going to grab it for you don't do what i did. i just went behind theglass and grab whatever have wanted you're supposed to go on the other side and just pointed out and they would grab the dish that you pointed out, steamthem up for you for a couple minutes

and you just go to your table and waitfor them to serve you so far this is the best value dimsum i ever had i went there a couple times and eachtime cost me around 250 baht, which is around $7 usd. the the look canbe deceiving from the outside it doesn't look like a nice fancy restaurant but the quality of the food, the qualityof the dim sum is world class. i ate a lot of them dim sum back home and iremember eating at some high-end dim sum restaurants, the quality is just up topar to some of the high-end dim sum that i ate back in toronto, canada butfor the fraction and price

alright so number three on my list isthe bbq, is the isaan style bbq with sticky rice. this place is located atthe entrance of the kad suan kaew shopping center. they open only onthursdays, fridays and saturdays evening from 6pm till 11pm. this type of isaanbbq, the meat are marinated with different types of herbs and spices. itcould be a bit salty if you never tried one before, i usually order the bbq ribs pork and chicken you're supposed to again eat it withsticky rice but you don't have to it comes with a dipping sauce and thesauce is a little bit salty and spicy it also comes with different type ofveggies. i used to make this when i was

back in canada and i used to marinatedifferent type of meat like ribs and chicken and i would get charcoal not propane because i think the charcoal enhance the flavor. it hasthat smoky flavor to it, the propane doesn't have that. so i used to makethis type of dish back in canada and it would take me very long time because youhave to marinate the meat overnight usually and then start the charcoal and takes a couple hours to do it and then you have to cleanthe dishes and clean everything up so i appreciate just walking to this placeevery thursday, or friday or saturday and just pay maybe 80 90 baht and havesomeone else to do all the hard work for

you and you have a very delicious meal my number two on my list is thismexican restaurant this is another restaurant that's justminutes in front of my apartment. i never try this restaurant until the lastcouple months when i stay in chiang mai and the only reason why i check out thisrestaurant was because it wasn't busy during the daytime there's only ahandful of people in there but it gets pretty busy during evenings also i don'teat a lot of mexican food back in canada usually when we go out with myfriends or family we usually go to asian, chinese, thai restaurants. idecided to check out this restaurant and

i was hooked with their food from dayone. when i first order my meal and i was waiting on my table there for a splitsecond when i was looking outside the window of the restaurant seeing the gasstation and for a split second i thought i was back back home in canada. thena tuk tuk drove by. the atmosphere of the restaurant is very modern, verywesternized and it's very clean. after i had my first meal here i finally realizedwhy it gets pretty busy during the evenings because the food here was veryvery good, it was amazing some of the best, actually like the bestmexican food that i ate and it happened to be in thailand. the following day icame back and i ate again try something

a little different and then the dayafter that i came back again. i think i came back four straight days after myfirst visit because i love the food here. the ingredients was so fresh they had their own homemade spices, myfavorite one is the yellow spicy one the portions is nice andgenerous, it's huge you're going to have a pretty hard timeto finish it, at least for me anyways so after my four days eating there straight i had to stopmyself from eating there, not because i don't want to eat there, it's because i was on a budget and i couldn't afford going there

every single day because one of thesedish cost around 200 to 250 baht and some other dish could cost over 300baht but on average is around 200-250 baht and that's way over my budget. ihad to stop myself from eating there everyday. so instead of going there everyday i eventually went there maybe once twice per week. i usually come herearound noon or one clock, during the evening especially during the highseason this place is super busy i ate here onlyduring the daytime and i only remember once i ate there during theevening and for whatever reason and this is just my opinion. the food the qualitywasn't as good when i order it during

the evening maybe it's because there were too many customers, there were too many people in the restaurant and maybe they didn't haveenough staff to prepare everything so they have to kind of rush it but againthat's my opinion i only come here during the daytime, ifyou can go during the daytime i think the food tastes a little bit better whenthey have more time to prepare food and not rushing it with 50 customers inthe restaurants and if you want to try amazing mexican food in chiang mai. yougot to check this place out is very very good alright so number one on my list is thespicy thai sausage and i don't have

the address for this place because wedrove maybe an hour north of the chiang mai city. is somewhere up north on theside of a mountain it's not your typical restaurant itdidn't have a ceiling and didn't have walls. they have like a small bambootent or a place where you can sit away from the sun or the rain but we decidedto sit at the back next to a small stream water flowing down the mountain we're eating outdoor in nature, you can see butterflies and i haven't see butterflies for so many yearsyou can see the stream of water flowing down the mountain, it's verydifferent from other restaurants and

there's just like a bunch of tables atthe back and you just sit down grab a cold beer or grab some food there's no air pollution, there's nonoise, there's no people walking around on the sidewalk it's just you, nature and your friends aswell as home cook sausages these sausages are a little bit spicier thanyour typical sausage. it's made out of pork and it has all sorts of herbs inside thesausage, it's very tender as well as a little bit spicy but not too spicy it also has a little bit of sweetness toit but it's not like they added sugar

or anything like that. the sweetness camefrom the the meat it was a combination of the outdoor, thestream of water flowing down the mountain, the butter flies, the group of friends that i came with, the home cook sausage made it this my number one on the list becauseit was the most memorable moment for me in chiang mai alright so there you have it my top 10foods and restaurants in chiang mai you don't have to spend hundreds ofdollars or even twenty dollars to have a top-notch, high-quality food inchiang mai
